IDV Evidence Guide

If you live overseas, have recently moved home, or have changed your name, you will need to provide additional documentation alongside your identity document.

For UK individuals, we will first attempt to verify your current address using third-party databases. If these checks are unsuccessful, or if you have moved home within the last 12 months, you will also be required to provide separate proof of address. Documents do not need to be originals or certified.

Verifying Your Current or Recent Address

For individuals based outside the UK, or UK residents who have moved home in the last 12 months, one of the documents listed below will always be required.

The following documents are acceptable as evidence of current residential address. Your name and the corresponding address should appear clearly on the document:

  • Bank or building society statement
    – Dated within the last 3 months.
  • Mortgage statement
    – Dated within the last 3 months.
  • UK council tax statement
    – Dated within the current council tax year.
  • Utility bill – Gas, electricity, satellite television, or landline phone
    – Dated within the last 3 months.
  • Driving licence
    – Only accepted where not used as the primary identity document.
  • Visa, residence permit, or national ID card
    – Only accepted where not used as the primary identity document.

(Foreign equivalents of the listed documents are acceptable.)

Proof of address history

The same documents can be used to evidence a 12-month address history and must be dated no more than 6 months before the claimed change of address. Evidence will be required for each change of address within the last 12 months.

The following documents will not be accepted:

  • Credit card statements
  • Mobile phone bills
  • Any document that was also used to verify your identity.

Verifying a Change of Name

The following documents are acceptable as evidence of a change of name:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Civil partnership certificate
  • Gender recognition certificate (GRC)
  • Deed poll
  • Adoption order or certificate
  • Divorce or dissolution order

(Foreign equivalents of the listed documents are acceptable.)

Document Format and Redactions

We do not require original documents or certified copies. A clear scan or photograph of the document is sufficient. Files can be submitted in PDF or common image formats (such as JPEG or PNG), provided the relevant information is legible.

Redactions are permitted to remove sensitive information (e.g., transaction details on a bank statement) as long as the relevant information is visible.

Document Language

If the relevant section of a document is not legible in English, a non-official translation must accompany the evidence.
